Deep in the Forest

art pen - 1998

I used to do a lot of hiking, and a number of the areas I visited contained remnants of earlier farms and constructions. One of my favorite hiking spots was the local reservoir, which had several old houses and foundations, as well as markers for underground pipelines that may or may not have still been in use. It was thought-provoking to come across things like that, so I think that’s partly where this house came from, even though the house pictured here is in far better shape than the ones that inspired it.

The odd way in which the branches are twisted - which, if you look closely, you’ll see would be impossible in real life - was my attempt at including an Escher effect to make the drawing more interesting. Since the initial focus is on the house, though, it looks like I just made a mistake. I was learning.
