Inspired by Escher, I did a lot of work based around strange, elaborate buildings and scenes. The leaf-shaped objects in the top right of the drawing are indeed leaves - flying, magic-carpet type leaves with masts and sailors. I was also working on another drawing focusing on the leaf boats, and I thought it would be fun to have some details overlap.
Frivolous note: the letters on the milestone by the path read ‘MAC IISI’, because I had just gotten a Macintosh IIsi computer around the time of the drawing, and loved that machine like some people love their sports cars or yachts. It’s a silly touch, but slipping in small details with a private meaning is one way in which I personalize my work.
