Trees

calligraphy pen - 1998
I’d just gotten a set of brush pens and was trying to figure out a style that would take the best advantage of them. At this point, I was most used to working with micro-fine art pens that gave me control over every detail. The brush pens were wider and softer, so it took some time before I started to get a sense for what they could do.
Eventually, I became skilled at generating tapered, wavy lines that looked like woodcuts and were great for organic objects and textures. ‘Trees’ came from one of these early experiments.
